Romário de Souza Faria, born on January 29, 1966, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is one of the greatest strikers in football history. Known for his incredible finishing, close control, and instinct inside the box, Romário was a key player in Brazil’s 1994 FIFA World Cup victory and one of the most prolific goal-scorers of all time.


Early Life and Career

Romário started his professional career at Vasco da Gama in 1985, where his goal-scoring ability quickly made him one of Brazil’s top young talents. His performances earned him a move to PSV Eindhoven in 1988, where he dominated Dutch football.


PSV Eindhoven: European Stardom

At PSV Eindhoven, Romário became a goal machine, scoring 165 goals in 167 matches and winning multiple Eredivisie titles. His explosive speed and ability to finish from any angle made him one of the deadliest strikers in the world.

With PSV Eindhoven, he won:

  • 3 Eredivisie titles (1988–89, 1990–91, 1991–92)
  • 3 KNVB Cups (1988–89, 1989–90, 1991–92)

His success in the Netherlands led to a move to FC Barcelona in 1993.


Barcelona and the Dream Team

Romário joined Barcelona in 1993, becoming a key figure under Johan Cruyff in the famous “Dream Team.” His technical brilliance and clinical finishing helped Barcelona win La Liga in 1993-94, where he scored 30 goals in 33 matches, winning the Pichichi Trophy as the league’s top scorer.

His most famous moment came in El Clásico against Real Madrid, where he scored a legendary hat-trick in a 5-0 victory.


1994 FIFA World Cup: Brazil’s Hero

Romário was Brazil’s undisputed star at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, leading the team to their fourth World Cup title. He scored 5 goals and formed a lethal partnership with Bebeto. In the final against Italy, Romário calmly converted his penalty in the shootout to help Brazil win their first World Cup in 24 years.

For his performances, he won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1994.


Later Career and Goal-Scoring Records

Romário played for numerous clubs in Brazil, Spain, and the United States, continuing to score goals well into his 40s. He became one of the few players in history to score over 1,000 career goals, joining the ranks of Pelé and Josef Bican.
