Denis Law, born on February 24, 1940, in Aberdeen, Scotland, is one of the greatest Scottish footballers of all time. Known for his deadly finishing, acrobatic style, and incredible goal-scoring ability, Law became a Manchester United legend and remains the club’s second all-time top scorer. He was also Scotland’s joint-top scorer for many years, making him a true icon of British football.

Early Life and Career

Law began his football journey with Huddersfield Town in 1956, where his raw talent as a striker quickly became evident. His performances attracted the attention of bigger clubs, leading to a transfer to Manchester City in 1960 for a then-British record fee of £55,000.

His spell at City was brief but impressive, and in 1961, he moved to Torino in Italy for a then-record fee of £110,000, becoming one of the first British players to move abroad. However, he struggled with the defensive style of Italian football and returned to England after just one season.

Manchester United: The King is Crowned

In 1962, Law joined Manchester United, where he would go on to become one of the greatest players in the club’s history. His combination of skill, aggression, and goal-scoring ability made him a fan favorite, and he played a vital role in United’s success under Sir Matt Busby.

With Manchester United, he won:
🏆 2 First Division (now Premier League) titles (1964–65, 1966–67)
🏆 1 FA Cup (1962–63)
🏆 1 Charity Shield (1965)

He scored 237 goals in 404 games, making him United’s second-highest goal scorer of all time, behind Wayne Rooney.

Ballon d’Or Winner (1964)

In 1964, Law won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the first and only Scottish player to ever win the award. He was recognized as the best player in Europe, thanks to his goal-scoring exploits and leadership on the pitch.

European Cup Triumph & Heartbreaking End

Law was part of United’s European Cup-winning squad in 1967–68, but a knee injury kept him out of the final against Benfica, which United won 4-1.

In a cruel twist of fate, after leaving United in 1973 to rejoin Manchester City, he scored a famous backheel goal against United in 1974, which helped confirm their relegation. Believing he had contributed to their downfall, he refused to celebrate.

Scotland National Team: The Tartan Legend

Law was a key player for Scotland, earning 55 caps and scoring 30 goals, making him the country’s joint-top scorer for decades alongside Kenny Dalglish.
